Tracking Meteors and Space Junk with Fireballs in the Sky

“Fireballs in the sky” is a citizen science app as part of the Desert Fireball Network (DFN). DFN cameras in the Australian desert and the app trac meteors and space junk as it enters the skies.

The project will contribute to the science, development, and engagement aspects of the app.

About

The Desert Fireball Network consists of cameras in the Australian desert that take pictures of the night sky. Together they provide a picture of the southern sky every 30 minutes. This allows scientists to track meteors as well as space junk.

“Fireballs in the sky” is a citizen science app wherein when the public spots an object, they can use their phone to report the object's position and track/path.

The app has been in redevelopment.  As part of the project, students can work on the development side of the app, work with the science team on object reports, and engage in science communication and public understanding research.
