About

Left: Galactic ASKAP HI absorption survey towards the background continuum sources. Right: An example of the Gaussian decomposition of both emission and absorption spectra.

Combining absorption and emission measurements offers a direct and comprehensive method to extract the properties of HI gas towards continuum background sources. This technical project aims to develop a new approach for fitting absorption and emission spectra simultaneously, employing Gradient Descent and Bayesian methods. The main goal is to create a user-friendly package allowing researchers to select either Gaussian or pseudo-Voigt profile shapes for the fitting process. This method will serve as a milestone towards future projects, where the same technique can be applied to fit the emission HI data.

Python programming skills are preferred for this project.
