Robert Boz

Robert Boz is a Mechanical Engineering Lead for GMTIFS and GMTNIRS OIWFS, bringing more than 25 years of specialised experience in optomechanical, cryogenic and vacuum system design. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechatronics and has built a career spanning both research and industrial environments.

At the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA), Robert has worked across a number of major astronomical instrumentation programs, contributing his expertise in mechanical, optomechanical and cryogenic engineering. His work has included the development of instrumentation for the Giant Magellan Telescope, including GMTIFS and GMTNIRS OIWFS.

Robert has also been closely involved in the development and delivery of several significant astronomical instruments, including NIFS and the WiFeS detector upgrade. His experience encompasses the full engineering process, from design and thermal analysis through to mechanical assembly, integration and testing. He has also contributed to the development of cryogenic avalanche photodiode detectors and complex space simulation facilities.

As Lead Mechanical Engineer for the Space Simulation Facility (S2F), Robert has further applied his extensive expertise to complex engineering systems and specialised testing environments.

Outside his professional work, Robert has a strong interest in horticulture. He enjoys growing unique tree specimens for landscape gardening and promoting the role of mycorrhizae in plant health and cultivation.
