Tania Barone

What is your thesis topic or research interest?

Stellar populations, particularly in early-type galaxies.

Where have you come from to join this program?

Adelaide.

How did you become interested in Astronomy?

When we were kids my little brother said he wanted to be an astronomer, and so over the years was given a bunch of books on astronomy. I didn't know what I wanted to be, so I copied his idea. I then started reading all the books and became hooked, and although he moved on (to software engineering), I've always stuck with it!

What experience have you gained while studying at Mt Stromlo?

I've really benefited from the research-focused aspect of studying at Mt Stromlo, which was originally at odds with my more theoretically based undergraduate studies.

What has been the highlight of the program for you so far?

Being able to travel interstate to attend conferences and workshops, because it allows you to meet and collaborate with people from other institutions.

What do you see yourself doing upon completion of your PhD?

Hopefully a career in research!

Why would you recommend Mt Stromlo to others?

There is a great sense of community at RSAA and the scenery of the mountain is beautiful.

What are the benefits of life in Canberra?

Canberra is a charming city; it's easy to get around and there are lots of good bike paths.

What advice would you give to someone considering studying Astronomy?

A degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics gives you a wide range of valuable skills, and so is useful even in careers outside of academic research.
