Undergraduate

RSAA provides a range of opportunities for undergraduate students to take part in research programs with astronomers at the School.

Major in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Students in the ANU Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Advanced) (Honours) program can choose to undertake a Major in Astronomy & Astrophysics. In addition to the general recommendations on that page (especially at least one COMP course, 2nd-year PHYS and MATH), there are a few other recommendations for specific skillsets and interests:

Note that high performing e.g. PhB students, some of these pre-requisites can be negotiated to be waived - most importantly STAT1008 and COMP1110.

Research topic for ANU undergraduate students

research topic course (ASTR3005) is offered to later-year ANU undergraduates, in which students undertake a research project in any area of astrophysics over the course of a semester.

Science PhB Advanced Studies Course (SCNC-course) research project and awards

Science PhB students have the opportunity to undertake astrophysics research projects within an Advanced Studies course. Interested PhB students should contact the RSAA PhB Convenor, Associate Professor Christoph Federrath (Christoph.Federrath@anu.edu.au), for more information.

Advanced Studies Course awards: Eligible students may be able to apply for an ASTRO 3D Science PhB Advanced Studies Course Award (AUD$3,000/project) or for an RSAA Science PhB Advanced Studies Course Award (AUD$3,000/project). RSAA Winter School

RSAA hosts a mid-year winter school that provides a select group of undergraduates the chance to experience research and observing activities at the school.

ANU Summer Research Scholarship Program and AITC Summer Student / Northrop Grumman Global Externship Program

In addition, ANU Summer Research Scholarship Program places and AITC Summer Internship / Northrop Grumman Global Externship Program places are available at RSAA/AITC to students from around Australia and New Zealand during the university summer break each year.

Projects

A list of potential research projects is available on the potential projects page. However, this list is not exhaustive and students are welcome to contact a potential supervisor to discuss their own project ideas.
