Using LEGO and 3D printing for optical instruments

Optical instruments usually require high precision mechanical mounts to achieve the very highest optical precision. Not all optical instruments need to achieve these tight tolerances to be useful. This project will explore the possibility of building optical instruments such as telescopes, alignment scopes, and metrology equipment using off the shelf rapid prototyping solutions such as LEGO and 3D printing. 

Prospective students should have a background in engineering and/or physics, with some undergraduate experience in either optics or building with consumer level 3D printers.
