Quintuple Galaxy Merger

Mergers between more than two galaxies are unusual; mergers between five galaxies are extremely rare, with only a handful known in the Universe. As such, very little is known about them. Such a quintuple merger has been found in a cosmological simulation, allowing for its full evolution to be investigated.

In this project, you will compare the properties of the galaxy formed by the merger to those of the full galaxy population. If the galaxy has unusual properties, how long do they persist? Can we use these results to identify observed galaxies that may have undergone a similar event? If not, why did such an extreme event produce a normal-looking galaxy?
