Laser Guide Star for tracking space debris

The ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) has partnered with EOS Space Systems, Lockheed Martin Space Systems, and other academia/industry partners within the Space Environment Research Centre (SERC) to build the first Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics (LGS AO)-enhanced satellite/debris laser tracking station in Australia. The LGS AO systems include two Adaptive Optics benches currently under test at the EOS laser tracking station on Mount Stromlo: the Adaptive Optics Imaging bench and the Adaptive Optics Tracking and Pushing (AOTP SERC website) bench. The system also includes a Laser Guide Star Facility (LGSF) currently being assembled and tested at the ANU RSAA Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre (AITC) before components are installed on the EOS 1.8m telescope for on-sky laser testing and commissioning later this year (2019). In this project, students will have the opportunity to work with advanced laser and adaptive optics technologies, under supervision by world leading instrument scientists and engineers at the Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre (AITC) on Mount Stromlo, in close collaboration with industry.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students with a strong interest in instrumentation are welcome to contact the project supervisors to inquire about possible research projects, internships, and professional experience placements in the context of this and other LGS AO projects at the RSAA. Prior experience in at least two of the following disciplines is required: physics, optics/optical engineering, system engineering, space engineering, instrumentation, laser systems, control systems, computer science.
