Quantifying the velocity structure in turbulent rotating molecular clouds

Star form in turbulent molecular clouds in the interstellar medium of galaxies. The turbulence in these clouds controls the formation of stars and hence it is of crucial importance to develop accurate observational techniques to measure the turbulent properties of galactic clouds.

The goal of this project is to characterise the turbulent motions by measuring them in mock observations of turbulent molecular cloud simulations. You will take existing simulation data of rotating turbulent clouds and produce synthetic spectra with Python. We will then analyse these spectra to disentangle rotational and turbulent cloud motions, providing new techniques to isolate the truly turbulent motions that control the formation  of stars in these clouds.
