Building an observatory in virtual reality

The Giant Megellan Telescope (GMT) is currently being build in Chile. On paper, the observatory is already designed and can therefore be rendered on a computer for virtual visualization. Such a virtual observatory is useful for the engineers to plan future procedures such as instrument installation or safety drills. It is also a great way for the public to preview the observatory before it becomes a reality.

This project will make use of the existing Solidworks drawings of the observatory and transform them into a fully working environment thanks to the gaming engin Unity. The expected final product will be usable via an Oculus Rift. Mechanical engineer students or computer science students with an interest in game development are perfect for this project. Experience with Solidworks, Blender and Unity prefered but not compulsory.
