2009 International Year of AstronomyJan 30, 2009 - Dec 31, 2009
The International Year of Astronomy, 2009, is a worldwide, public celebration of astronomy, held to mark the 400th anniversary of Galileo turning a telescope to the sky. The Year has been endorsed by UNESCO.

IYA2009 is being coordinated by the International Astronomical Union. Australia is one of the 63 countries signed up to participate.

Skymapper Telescope LaunchMay 25, 2009
Australia’s newest telescope, SkyMapper, is the first ever to conduct a full digital survey of the southern skies. The telescope will be launched with concurrent ceremonies at Mount Stromlo Observatory in Canberra and its physical location at Siding Spring Observatory near Coonabarabran, NSW. Public Talk: Stars and GalaxiesApr 24, 2009
The Spanish Embassy in Canberra and Mt Stromlo Observatory have organized a public talk followed by an amateur observation about "Stars and Galaxies". Spanish astronomer, Dr. Angel R. Lopez-Sanchez (CSIRO /ATNF), will give a multi-coloured vision of how stars are born and die in the galaxies of the Local Universe.

On Saturday 28 March from 8:30 to 9:30pm people around the world will participate in Earth Hour by switching off the lights to raise awareness of the link between energy consumption and climate change.
